Category = bandwidth × distance.

Cat6 supports 1 Gbps @ 100 m. Cat6A supports 10 Gbps @ 100 m. Cat8 supports 40 Gbps but only 30 m.

Shielded vs unshielded matters in Saudi MEP rooms.

F/UTP or S/FTP for runs near VFDs, motors, lift shafts. UTP fine for office plenum. Don't mix in the same backbone.

Fibre wins above 100 m, always.

OM3 multi-mode (10 Gbps to 300 m), OM4 (400 m), single-mode OS2 (40 km). Backbone the building on OS2 if you're touching it.

PoE budget is now part of the cable spec.

Cat6 carries Type 1 (15 W). Cat6A handles Type 4 (90 W) without heating problems. Pull Cat6A in any new build with PoE devices.

Designing a cable plant that ages well

Five decisions made at design time that the whole building lives with.

The cable outlives the equipment 3×.

A switch lives 7 years. An access point lives 5. A camera lives 6. The cable in the wall lives 25+. Spec for the bandwidth your devices will demand in 2035, not the ones you have today. Cat6A is the safe default for any new Saudi build.

PoE heat in a bundle is real.

Cat6 cables in a tightly bundled tray running PoE Type 3 (60 W) can rise 10–15 °C above ambient. The conductors are within spec but the bundle interior overheats, drives DC resistance up, and the powered device gets less than rated. Cat6A or smaller bundles fix it.

MICE classification matters in industrial sites.

ISO/IEC 11801 MICE rates the environment (Mechanical, Ingress, Climatic, Electromagnetic). Most office cabling is M1I1C1E1. A petrochemical plant or steel mill might be M3I3C3E3, different sheaths, different connectors, different testing. Spec MICE in the RFP.

Test to permanent link, not channel.

Cable plants are certified two ways. Permanent link (the cable as installed, no patch cords) is the harder spec, and the one any reputable Saudi MEP consultant demands. Channel (with patch cords) is easier to pass. Insist on permanent-link certification on every drop.

Fibre to the work area is now policy.

Major NEOM and Red Sea Global tenders specify FTTO (Fibre To The Office) for new builds, fibre runs to the desk, with a media converter or active edge switch at the workstation. Pure copper backbones are being phased out for projects above ~5,000 m².
