Three protocols dominate lighting control. 0-10V is the simplest analogue. DALI-2 is the lighting-native digital bus. KNX is the whole-building automation backbone. Each has a place, pick the one that matches the project, not the brochure.
Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.
Simple, cheap, no addressing. One control signal to all drivers on the same pair. Group control only, no per-fixture commands.
Two-wire, polarity-insensitive. Up to 64 individually addressable fixtures per line, grouped into 16 scenes. DALI-2 added sensors and certified interoperability.
Lighting, HVAC, shading, security on one twisted pair. Decentralised, every device has logic. Best for villas, palaces, mixed-use towers.
Casambi, Silvair, Aqara, modern wireless meshes replace some cabling. Useful for retrofits; risky for safety-critical applications.
Topology and addressing capacity per published protocol standards.
| Protocol | Topology · capacity | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 0-10V (analogue) | Star · group only | Small offices · retail · single floor |
| DALI-2 (IEC 62386) | Bus · 64 addr per line, multi-line via gateway | Offices · hospitals · multi-tenant |
| DMX512 (theatre) | Bus · 512 channels per universe | Stage · concert · architectural facade |
| KNX (ISO/IEC 14543-3) | Bus + ring · 65,000 devices | Villas · palaces · mixed-use |
| BACnet/IP (BAS bridge) | IP · unlimited | HVAC integration · large buildings |
| Zigbee 3.0 / Bluetooth Mesh | Mesh · 200+ nodes | Retrofit · hospitality · campus |
| Casambi (Bluetooth) | Mesh · 250 nodes | Hotel rooms · small offices |
Five practical filters that pick the protocol for the project.
If the scope is only lighting (no HVAC, no shading, no integration), DALI-2 wins. It's vendor-neutral (any DALI-2 driver works with any DALI-2 controller), addressable per fixture, and certified at https://www.dali-alliance.org. Saudi offices, hospitals, and retail projects increasingly mandate DALI-2 by name.
KNX has a fixed device cost premium (every actuator is 500–1500 SAR vs DALI's 50–200 SAR per channel). It pays back only when you integrate lighting, HVAC, shading, security in one system. For lighting-only or small projects, KNX is over-engineering.
New designs almost never spec 0-10V except in the smallest projects. Existing 0-10V can be bridged to DALI via gateways (Lunatone, Tridonic). For a retrofit, this saves rewiring while gaining addressability.
DMX512 has 1 ms refresh, perfect for stage shows. It does not handle large topology, has no feedback, no sensor inputs. Use DMX for theatrical and architectural-facade only. For interiors, DALI or KNX.
Casambi, Silvair, Bluetooth Mesh are amazing when you cannot pull cable. But: spectrum congestion (Wi-Fi, BLE phones, Zigbee competing), no SLA, and proprietary cloud dependencies. For new construction with predictable cable paths, wired DALI-2 outperforms wireless every time.
We design and deploy DALI-2 lighting systems with optional KNX gateway for full building integration. Every project includes commissioning and 5-year support.
