An LED is a current-controlled diode. The grid is voltage-controlled AC. The driver is the bridge, and it decides life expectancy, dimming behaviour, and surge survival. Half of a premium fixture's price is in this one box.

Modern LED drivers regulate output current (mA), not voltage. The voltage adjusts to whatever string the load needs. CC = predictable lumens.
LED tape and modular signage typically want a fixed DC voltage (12V or 24V) and have their own per-LED resistors. CV drivers serve those.
Class I drivers need protective earth, used in metal fixtures. Class II are double-insulated, used in plastic-bodied or recessed fixtures. Don't mix.
Phase-cut (TRIAC) for residential retrofits. 0-10 V for commercial. DALI for control systems. PWM for fine colour. Each demands a different driver.

Five gaps between budget and premium LED drivers.
Most driver failures start with the input electrolytic cap. Its life halves every 10 °C above rated. A premium driver uses 105 °C-rated long-life caps; a budget one uses 85 °C caps. Same fixture, 30,000 h vs 100,000 h life.
A driver claiming 1-100% dimming may actually drop to 30% with PWM gating below that, visible flicker on camera, low-end lumen non-linearity. Always verify with a flicker meter (FPF, SVM) at low dim levels.
TRIAC dimmers (Lutron, Leviton, Saudi Schneider) interact differently with each driver brand. A spec saying "dimmable" without naming the dimmer model is broken. The driver datasheet has a compatibility matrix, use it.
LM-80 covers the LED; IEC 62384 covers the driver. A driver tested for L70 at Tc = 75 °C running at Tc = 90 °C in your fixture will fail in half the rated life. Spec a temperature probe location on the body marked tc.
Premium specs require the driver to be field-replaceable through an access plate, not potted into the fixture. When the driver dies at year 8, you change a 200 SAR component, not a 2,000 SAR fixture. Field-replaceable drivers cost 5–10% more, and save 50% lifecycle cost.
