The IEC 60529 ingress protection code in 110 seconds. Why a Riyadh streetlight needs IP66 minimum, why an office downlight gets away with IP20, and what changes for kitchens, fountains, and washdown areas.
Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.
IP65 means 6 = dust-tight, 5 = protected against water jets. Higher is more sealed, not better, over-sealing hurts thermal.
Sand and dust storms (Shamal season) put any rating below IP6X at risk. Civil Defense effectively rejects IP54 streetlights now.
Each second-digit step is a different test: jets, immersion, prolonged immersion, hot high-pressure washdown. Don't substitute one for another.
A sealed body cannot dump heat. The driver and LED run hotter, and lose life. Spec the minimum IP you actually need.
Per IEC 60529. Bracket the spec to the lowest digit that meets the environment, higher costs thermal life.
| IP code | Protects against | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| IP20 | Solid > 12 mm · no water | Indoor offices · classrooms |
| IP44 | Solid > 1 mm · splash from any direction | Bathrooms · semi-covered balconies |
| IP54 | Limited dust · splash | Garages · sheltered exterior |
| IP65 | Dust-tight · water jets | Streetlights · canopies |
| IP66 | Dust-tight · strong jets | Façades · marine-adjacent |
| IP67 | Dust-tight · 1 m immersion 30 min | Walkway uplights · planters |
| IP68 | Continuous submersion (depth defined) | Fountains · pool walls |
| IP69K | High-pressure hot washdown | Food production · car wash |
Five facts that change how you spec ingress protection on a Saudi project.
Saudi summers bring sustained dust storms with PM10 above 1000 µg/m³. A nominal IP54 fixture passes the lab's calibrated dust chamber but fails open-window seal in three years. We see this on retrofit projects every season.
IP ratings test new fixtures. A silicone gasket in 60 °C ambient loses ≈ 30% of its compression after 5 years. For tunnels, airports, and critical infrastructure, plan a re-test cadence into the maintenance contract.
IPx6 is verified by 8 hours under negative pressure with talc particles. No particles enter. "Dust-tight" in trade language; "dust-proof" in marketing, they are the same in code.
A sealed luminaire traps junction-temperature heat. An IP65 highbay typically derates lumens 5–10% vs an IP20 equivalent with the same chip. The L80B10 rating drops accordingly. Spec the minimum IP you need.
Most field IP failures are at the cable gland or quick-connector, not the optic. A body rated IP66 with an IP54 gland is overall IP54. Inspect at delivery; reject mismatched components.
Our outdoor catalogue defaults to IP66 with stainless cable glands and silicone gaskets graded for 25-year service in Gulf ambient.
