What is IK? The impact code that keeps a streetlight alive

A second code that quietly ships on the same datasheet as IP. What the joules mean, where you actually need IK08 or IK10, and the test that decides the badge.

IK = mechanical impact protection.

Defined in IEC 62262. Rates how much kinetic energy the enclosure absorbs without compromising the IP rating.

Scale is logarithmic-ish, in joules.

IK01 = 0.15 J (a child's tap). IK10 = 20 J (a 5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm). Most outdoor LED housings target IK08 (5 J).

Saudi street + warehouse default is IK08.

Forklifts, ladders, sand, and the occasional rock from a passing truck. Below IK08 and you replace lenses, not bulbs.

Polycarbonate is the workhorse.

PC at 3 mm passes IK08; at 5 mm hits IK10. Glass is harder to score but shatters; PC dents but stays whole.

How the impact is applied

The badge is earned on a bench, not on paper: a known mass, a known drop height, one measured blow, per IEC 62262 with IEC 60068-2-75.

The steel striker is raised to drop height h and released. At the bottom of the swing it hits the luminaire face with energy E = m·g·h. A 5 kg mass from 400 mm lands about 20 J, which is IK10. The enclosure must still hold its IP rating after the hit, not just keep its shape.

IEC 62262 borrows three hammers from IEC 60068-2-75. The lab picks the one that fits the surface; each delivers the joules the IK code calls for: pendulum for front faces, spring for small or recessed spots, free-fall for flat tops.

IK in the real world

Five things people miss when they sign off on an IK rating.

The pendulum test is severe and specific.

IEC 62262 fixes a steel hammer mass and drop angle to deliver a defined joule energy at a defined velocity. The fixture must keep its IP rating after, not just keep its shape. "Looks fine" is not a pass.

Glass and PC fail differently.

Tempered glass passes IK by hardness; on overload it shatters into small cubes. Polycarbonate (PC) passes by toughness; on overload it dents or cracks but stays in frame. PC is preferred in zones with falling objects above heads.

Vandal-resistant ≠ vandal-proof.

IK10 says the fixture survives a 5 kg mass from 40 cm. A determined attacker with a hammer exceeds that. "Vandal-resistant" is a delay, not a guarantee. For stations and prisons, pair IK10 with mounting that is harder to access.

Lens thickness vs frame strength.

An IK10 spec on the diffuser does not automatically apply to the body. Read the test report, some lights ship IK10 lens, IK02 body. The weak point is the failure point.

Re-spec to IK after retrofit.

Replacing a fluorescent fixture with an LED retrofit kit often drops IK rating. The old housing was metal; the retrofit lens is plastic. Re-verify IK at handover.
