IP enclosures, gaskets, glands & drainage

What makes an IP65 panel actually IP65 after the cables are pulled, the gaskets seated, and the door closed, and the five details that fail every audit.

IP65 is a panel, not a sticker.

The factory certification covers the empty enclosure. The moment you cut a gland hole, the rating depends on the gland and the installer, not the manufacturer's stamp.

Glands rated to IP68.

Spec metric M-series glands rated IP68 with EPDM seal. Cheap PG glands are IP54 at best. The gland is the rating, not the box behind it.

Doors need 4-point closure above IP54.

Single latch + gasket is IP54. Four-point cam closure compresses the gasket evenly across the perimeter. Without it, the top edge of the gasket leaks first.

Outdoor enclosures need drains.

IP65 keeps water out, but condensation forms inside from day–night temperature swings. Spec a labyrinth drain at the lowest point, itself IP-rated, so insects can't enter.

Five decisions that ride on the build

IP is a test, not a sticker. The workshop work decides whether it passes.

Gasket compression is the make-or-break.

EPDM compressed 25-40% gives long-term IP65/66. Less than 15% and you fail by month six. Over 50% and the gasket takes a permanent set. Design the lid clamp to deliver controlled compression.

Cable gland choice dictates ingress class.

A loose-fit gland makes any enclosure leak. Match gland IP rating to enclosure rating with the right cable diameter range printed on the body. Brass IP68 glands cost $4 vs $0.30 plastic, the cheap one drops you back to IP54.

Drain holes save lives in Saudi.

Outdoor enclosures sealed to IP66 still get internal condensation. Daily heat cycling pumps humid air in and condenses it out. A 6 mm screened drain hole at the lowest point releases water without breaking the rating (the test orientation excludes it).

Labyrinth seal earns IP66 without expensive gaskets.

A double-stepped lid edge with the gasket between two steps deflects splash energy laterally; water can't reach the seal under hose-down. Common in switchgear and pumping panels.

Test it.

IP65 is a test (IEC 60529), not a claim on a drawing. A 6.3 mm nozzle at 12.5 L/min for 3 minutes from every direction, then open and check for water inside. Most IP65 enclosures fail the test the first time. Worth doing once per production batch in-house.
