LED driver architectures

EP18 covered why an LED needs a driver. This finale goes deeper: constant-current vs constant-voltage vs constant-power; isolated (Class I/II) vs non-isolated; PFC requirements (IEC 61000-3-2); surge protection (IEEE C62.41 + SBC 401). The driver is more sophisticated than the LED, and it's usually what fails first. Choose wisely.

Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.

Constant current (CC), most common.

Driver outputs fixed mA (e.g., 700, 1050, 1400 mA). LED voltage drift is compensated. Best for individual LED arrays.

Constant voltage (CV), strip lighting.

12V or 24V DC. Each LED segment has its own current-limiting resistor. Used for LED strips, signage.

Constant power (CP), premium.

Driver delivers fixed wattage even as LED Vf drifts. Most flexible. Used for high-power outdoor / industrial.

PFC mandatory above 25W.

EU EN 61000-3-2 / IEC 61000-3-2. Power factor ≥ 0.9 for commercial drivers. Bad PFC = SEC penalty in KSA.

Why driver choice decides lifetime

Five engineering decisions that drive 5+ years of LED life.

Electrolytic vs film capacitors.

Electrolytic caps fail in 5-15 years (heat-driven). Film-cap drivers can run 20+ years. Premium outdoor uses film caps.

Surge protection per SBC 401.

Saudi grid sees lightning surges and inductive transients. IEEE C62.41 + EN 61643 + SBC 401 require 4kV+ on outdoor drivers. Otherwise: failures every storm.

PFC + harmonics for grid friendliness.

Bad LED drivers inject 3rd, 5th, 7th harmonic. IEEE 519 + IEC 61000-3-2 limits. SEC may penalise large facilities for low PF.

Isolation = electrical safety.

Class I drivers (earthed metal body). Class II (double insulated, no earth). Class III (low voltage). SEC + SBC require Class I for most installations.

Dimmable / DALI / wireless add cost + benefit.

Premium drivers are SAR 30-150 more than basic. They pay back via 30-50% energy savings + scene control + IoT future.
