Dimmer compatibility, the 5 methods

Old halogen dimmers chop the AC waveform, TRIAC dimming. LED drivers need a different signal: 0-10V analogue, DALI digital, DMX for entertainment, or pulse-width modulation at the chip. Mismatched driver-dimmer pairs cause flicker, audible buzz, narrow dim range, or 'pop-on' / 'drop-out'. The compatibility matrix matters.

TRIAC = leading-edge phase cut.

Standard for retrofit. Works with halogen-rated dimmers. Limited dim range (~10-100%). Buzz risk.

0-10V = analogue control wire.

Industry-standard for commercial. Smooth dim to 1%. Two extra wires per fixture.

DALI = digital protocol.

Bidirectional, addressable, scene-able. Smooth 0.1-100% dim. Best for modern commercial / hospitality.

Entertainment standard. Fast (40 ms updates). Used for colour-changing and dynamic scenes.

Why dimming fails LEDs

Five common problems and how to fix them.

Halogen dimmer + LED = trouble.

TRIAC dimmers need a minimum load (40-60 W) to work properly. A 10 W LED can't satisfy it = flicker, buzz, or no dim. Use LED-compatible dimmers.

Mixed drivers on one circuit = chaos.

Five LEDs from three brands on one dimmer. Each driver responds differently to the phase-cut. Result: uneven dim curve, some flickering, some not.

Cheap drivers PWM at 200 Hz.

Visible flicker, especially in peripheral vision. Premium drivers PWM at 4 kHz+ or use analogue dimming for flicker-free.

Wireless protocol mismatch.

Casambi works with Casambi-enabled drivers only. Mixing Casambi + standard 0-10V on one room = control gap.

Emergency-mode and dimming clash.

Emergency-fed fixtures may not dim during normal operation. Always spec a separate emergency-only driver path, with full-output emergency operation.
