When wet paint wins on smoothness and repairability, and what you give up to powder. The chemistry of two-component polyurethane.
Mix in the gun, cure by chemistry rather than heat. Once cross-linked, harder than powder and UV-stable. Pot life is hours, not days, small batches only.
Marine and architectural gloss above 90 GU comes from wet paint. Powder peaks around 85. The smooth depth comes from solvent flow before cure.
A scratched powder coat needs a re-bake or a touch-up patch. Wet paint blends with the original. For street poles or fleet panels, repairability beats hardness.
Isocyanate is a respiratory sensitiser. Booths with breathing-air supply, full PPE, and 6 air-changes-per-hour. Cheap wet-paint shops skip this, the workers pay later.
Polyurethane and epoxy systems used on enclosures and structural steel.
| System | Coat thickness | Recoat / cure |
|---|---|---|
| 2K Polyurethane topcoat | 50-80 μm DFT | 16 h recoat @ 23°C |
| 2K Epoxy primer | 60-100 μm DFT | 12-24 h recoat |
| 2K Zinc-rich primer (Z-rich) | 50-75 μm DFT, ≥ 85% Zn | 4-12 h recoat |
| 2K Acrylic-urethane | 40-60 μm DFT | 8 h recoat |
| 2K Epoxy MIO mid-coat | 75-125 μm DFT | 12-24 h recoat |
| 3-coat system (Zn + epoxy + PU) | 240 μm total | C5-M coastal |
| Pot life @ 25°C (typical) | 2-4 hours | After mix, discard |
Two-pack means once you mix it, the clock starts. Plan accordingly.
Mix resin and hardener and you have 2-4 hours before viscosity climbs and the spray pattern dies. Mix only what you'll spray in the next hour. Leftover pot life ends up in the drain, there's no thinning it down and using tomorrow.
Spec dry film thickness; verify with a magnetic gauge once cured. Wet film thickness uses a comb gauge while spraying. Wet ≈ DFT ÷ solids fraction. For 60 μm DFT at 60% solids you spray 100 μm wet.
Riyadh dry conditions can survive zinc primer + PU topcoat (180 μm). Jeddah and Dammam need zinc + MIO epoxy mid-coat + PU topcoat (240+ μm). The MIO mid-coat is the corrosion barrier, not a cosmetic layer.
Below 5°C above dewpoint and moisture is trapped under the paint. Above 80% RH and PU topcoat hazes (amine blush). Saudi outdoor painting is a winter (Nov-Feb) sport on coastal sites.
A 2K PU defect re-coated with a 1K acrylic spray-can lasts six months. Always touch up with the same resin family from a properly mixed kit. Accept the visible repair line in exchange for the durability.
Heated downdraft booth at 22°C and 50% RH with twin-component pump dosing for repeatable 2K mixes. SASO and NORSOK M-501 systems available on request.
