SBC, which code covers what, and how to find it fast

SBC isn't one document, it's 13 volumes covering architecture, structure, electrical, mechanical, fire, energy, plumbing, gas, and more. Most engineers know SBC 401 (electrical) and SBC 801 (fire). Here's the full map and which volume governs what.

Animated explainer, press play to watch the concepts now; the filmed cut publishes once production wraps.

What you'll walk away with

Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.

01

13 SBC volumes governing every Saudi building.

From SBC 201 (architectural) to SBC 1001 (existing buildings), adopted from ICC base codes with Saudi-specific amendments.

02

SBC 401 = electrical, your daily driver.

Based on IEC standards. Covers wiring, distribution, protection, earthing, control of installations.

03

SBC 801 = fire and life safety.

Based on NFPA 101. KSA Civil Defense uses it for occupancy certification. Mandatory citation in every Saudi tender.

Navigating SBC like a pro

Five tips that save hours when researching Saudi compliance.

Cite by full reference, not section number alone.

Wrong: 'per Section 12.4'. Right: 'per SBC 401-2018, Section 12.4'. The number 12.4 means different things across volumes. Full citations survive code revisions and reviewer changes.

Match SBC to its underlying base.

SBC 401 ≈ IEC 60364 + select NEC. SBC 801 ≈ NFPA 101 with Saudi amendments. When SBC is silent on a topic, refer to the base. Reviewers expect this.

Amendments override the base.

SBC 401 has Saudi-specific amendments, for example, derating tables that account for 50 °C ambient. Where SBC differs from IEC, SBC wins. Always read the amendments section of each volume first.

Cross-reference governs multi-discipline conflicts.

SBC 401 says one thing about emergency lighting circuits. SBC 801 says something else. The conflict resolution is in Section 1 of each volume, usually the more restrictive interpretation governs.
