Mostadam is Saudi-built, climate, materials, water, energy categories scored against Saudi conditions. LEED is American-built, climate-neutral, globally applicable. Vision 2030 mega-projects increasingly require both. Here's where they reward the same engineering and where they don't.
Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.
50 °C ambient, dust storms, water scarcity baked into the scoring. Energy and water categories reward Saudi-specific solutions.
Same scoring globally. Some Saudi-relevant credits (heat island mitigation, daylight harvesting) score similarly to Mostadam, but methods differ.
70% of MEP/lighting credits map across both. Plan for both at concept design; retrofitting one onto a project certified to the other costs 2× the effort.
LEED has 4: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum. Mostadam Diamond ≈ LEED Gold in MEP rigour; Platinum is more stringent.
Approximate credit alignment. Verify with current versions before tender submission.
| Topic | Mostadam category | LEED v4.1 credit |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting power density (LPD) | Energy: LPD ≤ ASHRAE 90.1 −15% | EAc Optimize Energy Performance |
| Daylight harvesting controls | Energy: Daylighting Controls | EQc Daylight |
| Occupancy sensors | Energy: Lighting Controls | EQc Quality Views / Daylight |
| Outdoor lighting (Dark Sky) | Site: Light Pollution Reduction | SSc Light Pollution Reduction |
| Power factor correction | Energy: Power Quality (Saudi-unique) | Not directly credited |
| Water-efficient fixtures | Water: Indoor Water Use | WEc Indoor Water Use Reduction |
| EV charging infrastructure | Site: Sustainable Transport | LTc Electric Vehicles |
| Commissioning + verification | Process: Building Commissioning | EAc Enhanced Commissioning |
Five strategic moves at design that earn both Mostadam and LEED credits.
Designing LPD 15-25% below ASHRAE 90.1 baseline scores points on both ratings. Use Tunable White + occupancy sensors + daylight harvesting, three credits, one design.
Active power factor correction, sand-tolerant outdoor IP66+, and 50 °C-rated cabling all score on Mostadam. LEED is silent on these. Capture these for Mostadam without losing LEED.
Both ratings reward independent Commissioning Authority + measurement & verification. Hire one CxA that delivers reports formatted for both, half the cost of two separate processes.
Mostadam puts ~25% weight on water; LEED puts ~10%. Saudi projects with greywater + low-flow fixtures + xeriscaping easily hit Mostadam tier-up, score the same fixtures in LEED with no extra effort.
Submitting design narratives that explicitly map to both rating systems' credit categories at concept stage = no rework. Submitting LEED-only narrative then trying to retrofit Mostadam at DD stage = expensive rework.
Our submittals include credit-mapping templates for both Mostadam and LEED v4.1, with EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) on every fixture family for transparency credits.
