Residential lighting, room by room

A Saudi villa has 8 to 15 distinct functional zones, entry, majlis, dining, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, gardens. Each has different lux, CCT, and CRI needs. EN 12464-1 doesn't cover residential, but IES RP-11 and BS EN 12464 plus designer convention do. Here's the room-by-room playbook for KSA.

Animated explainer, press play to watch the concepts now; the filmed cut publishes once production wraps.

What you'll walk away with

Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.

01

Majlis / living: 100-300 lux ambient.

Three layers needed. Decorative pendant + downlights + accent on art. CCT 2700-3000K for evening atmosphere.

02

Kitchen: 500 lux ambient + 750 task.

Undercabinet LED for the counter is non-negotiable. CCT 3000-4000K for accurate food colour.

03

Bedroom: 100 lux ambient + dimmable.

Bedside reading 300-500 lux focused. Avoid blue-rich evenings (EP59 ipRGCs). 2700K and circadian-friendly.

04

Bathroom mirror: 750 lux vertical.

Vertical illuminance at the face for shaving / makeup. Two side fixtures, never one overhead (shadows under eyes). 4000K, CRI ≥ 90.

Designing the Saudi villa

Five common KSA residential decisions, and how to get them right.

Majlis = guests, formality, evening.

Multiple scenes: 'arrival' bright welcome, 'seated' dimmed warm, 'tea served' accent on the table. 3-4 DALI groups minimum. Always 2700K to flatter and welcome.

Kitchens are the most-overlooked task space.

A villa kitchen at 250 lux is dangerous (knives) and infuriating (food prep). 500 lux ambient + 750 lux undercabinet is the standard. Hood lights count as task.

Mirror lighting is where homes are judged.

Bad bathroom mirror = bad photos = bad self-image. Side-mounted vertical light at 750 lux, CRI 90+, 4000K. Never the standard overhead downlight on the face.

Outdoor lighting layers create curb appeal.

Path lights + facade uplights + tree spots + entry sconces. 4 layers, not one floodlight. Dark-sky compliant (EP21) and warm CCT (2700-3000K) for nighttime atmosphere.

Smart control is now affordable and expected.

Wired KNX or DALI for new builds. Wireless (Casambi, Zigbee 3.0) for retrofits. Voice control via Alexa/Google standard at the top tier. Saudi buyers expect it.
