Modern lighting traces to five names: Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison (independently invented practical incandescent bulb, 1878-1879); Nikola Tesla (AC distribution + neon); Nick Holonyak Jr. (first visible LED, 1962); and Shuji Nakamura (blue InGaN LED, 1993, Nobel 2014). Each one solved a different missing piece. Together they made the lit world.

British physicist. First practical incandescent bulb. Earlier than Edison by 10 months, but Edison commercialised it.
Carbon-filament bulb + the entire DC electrical system (generators, sockets, switches). Built the industry, not just the lamp.
GE engineer. First visible-light LED (red, GaAsP). Predicted LED would replace incandescent. Took 50 years to be right.
Cracked blue InGaN. Without blue, no white LED. Without white LED, no LED revolution. Nobel Prize 2014.

Five stories that explain how lighting got here.
Both made carbon-filament bulbs around 1878-1879. UK courts sided with Swan. They merged: Edison-Swan United (Edi-Swan), which dominated UK lighting for decades.
His real genius was Pearl Street Station (1882), generators, distribution, sockets, switches, meters. He sold the experience, not just the lamp. Tesla's AC eventually beat his DC for distribution.
His 1962 LED was red, 0.1% efficient, weak. Critics said it would never compete with incandescent. He was right but 50 years early.
Worked alone for years, called crazy, eventually delivered blue InGaN that enabled white LED. Sued his ex-employer for back wages, won $8M. Nobel 2014.
