IEC vs NEMA, the translation Saudi engineers can't skip

Saudi engineers work across two standards universes daily. SEC, NEOM, RSG, MoH = IEC. Aramco, SABIC, Maaden = often NEMA-influenced. A consultant who can't translate between them costs the project weeks of clarification. Here's the cheat sheet.

IEC = international consensus.

IEC 60364, 61439, 60529, etc. Developed by national committees voting. Adopted as SBC base by KSA. Default for commercial Saudi work.

NEMA = North American practice.

Often more permissive on sizing, different test methods (NEMA 250 enclosures vs IEC 60529). Aramco's legacy specs incorporate many NEMA conventions.

Enclosure ratings don't translate 1:1.

IP65 ≈ NEMA 4 but not identical. IP66 ≈ NEMA 4X partially. Always check the actual test method, wet location, sandstorm, washdown, not just the badge.

Cable + breaker sizing tables differ.

IEC tables (IEC 60364-5-52) and NEC tables (NFPA 70 Table 310.16) give different ampacities for the same conductor. Don't mix tables, pick a system and stay in it for the whole project.

Where the two systems truly diverge

Five practical differences that bite Saudi engineers on multi-standard projects.

Enclosure tests use different methods.

IP65 (IEC 60529) tests a 6.3 mm-nozzle water jet for 3 min from 3 m distance. NEMA 4 (NEMA 250) tests with a 25.4 mm hose at 200 kPa. The pass criteria look similar; the actual conditions differ. For a Saudi outdoor project with both Aramco and SEC stakeholders, you may need both badges.

Motor frame and protection sizing differs.

An IEC frame motor (IEC 60072) uses metric dimensions (e.g., 132M). A NEMA frame (NEMA MG-1) uses inches (e.g., 215T). They are not interchangeable. Spare motors purchased to the wrong standard don't fit. Always specify which frame.

Cable ampacity tables aren't aligned.

For 2.5 mm² Cu cable at 30 °C ambient, IEC 60364-5-52 (B2 method) gives ~24 A. NFPA 70 Table 310.16 for #14 AWG gives 20 A at 30 °C. Mixing tables on the same project = cable too small somewhere, too big somewhere else.

Voltage levels differ, and so do components.

Saudi grid: 400V / 230V at 50 Hz. North American grid: 480V / 277V at 60 Hz. Motors, drivers, transformers must match. Importing NEMA-rated equipment to Saudi often requires verifying 50 Hz operation, many North American devices are 60 Hz-only.

Standards adoption in Saudi is slowly converging.

SBC pulls from both IEC and select NEMA conventions. NEOM, RSG, and Diriyah Gate spec IEC throughout. Aramco upstream still has NEMA-flavoured specs. Identify your client's parent standard system at kick-off and document it in the project execution plan.
