Light is one of humanity's oldest engineered products. From the first controlled fires in Wonderwerk cave (500,000 years ago) to phosphor-converted blue InGaN, every leap in light technology unlocked new ways of living: night work, longer days, indoor cities, screens, the internet. Eight inventions, in chronological order, told in two minutes.
Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.
Wonderwerk cave, South Africa. First reliable artificial light. Reshaped human cognition, allowed cooking, extended day.
Animal-fat wicks. Portable indoor light. Spread across Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Carbon-filament bulb commercialised. First electric light. Killed gas lamps in a decade.
Nakamura's blue InGaN + phosphor (2014 Nobel). 200+ lm/W today. 95% energy reduction vs incandescent.
Chronology of artificial light, with efficacy where measurable.
| Date | Invention | Efficacy (lm/W) |
|---|---|---|
| 500,000 BCE | Fire | 0.3 |
| 70,000 BCE | Oil lamp | 0.2 |
| 3,000 BCE | Beeswax candle | 0.3 |
| 1792 | Gas lamp | 1-2 |
| 1801 | Arc light | 5 |
| 1879 | Edison incandescent | 10-14 |
| 1938 | Fluorescent tube | 50-100 |
| 2014 | Nakamura blue InGaN LED | 200+ |
Five inflection points where new light unlocked new life.
Pre-fire humans were dawn-to-dusk creatures. Fire added 4-6 working hours after sunset, cooking, storytelling, defence. Calorie surplus enabled larger brains.
Mesopotamian palaces, Egyptian temples, ancient libraries, all built around oil lamps. Night reading. Night writing. Night trade.
London 1810. Streets lit safely at night. Factories ran 24-hour shifts. Modern urban life impossible without it.
1879 commercial bulb. By 1900, electric lighting was standard in US/EU cities. Whole industries vanished. Same disruption pattern LED is having now on fluorescent.
0.1 W LED replaces 60 W incandescent at same lumens. Solar streetlights, mobile screens, displays, IoT, all built on LED's energy and electronic-control properties.
We're privileged to build the current frontier, phosphor-converted blue LED, tunable white, smart-controlled. The history doesn't stop here.
