Classroom lighting, 300 lux + boards

EN 12464-1 sets 300 lux on desks and 500 lux on the board, UGR ≤ 19, Ra ≥ 80. Modern Saudi schools (Vision 2030 education clusters) add tunable white for circadian alignment: 6500K morning alertness, 4000K mid-day work, 3000K creative sessions. Smart-board glare must also be controlled, direct fixtures above the board are forbidden.

Children's eyes are more sensitive to glare than adult eyes, they don't filter blue as much. UGR matters more here.

Five practices that lift student attention and reduce eye strain.

Tunable white classroom schedule.

08:00 cool 5000K bright. 11:00 neutral 4000K. 14:00 warm 3000K for creative sessions. Hamburg studies showed 15% reading-speed gains.

Anti-glare fixtures over smart boards.

Linear diffused luminaires aimed downward, never direct downlights. Wall-wash uplights on the board wall preserve contrast.

Daylight + electric blend smartly.

Daylight sensors near windows dim luminaires. South-facing Saudi classrooms get 10,000+ lux from windows, fixtures must dim or off when sufficient.

Glare on screens is now a major risk.

Tablets, Chromebooks, projectors. Veiling luminance kills usability. EN 12464-1:2021 added a screen-glare term (Lmean ≤ 1500 cd/m²) specifically for this.

Children's eyes need higher CRI.

Reading colour-coded materials, art class, science labs. Schools using Ra 90+ report fewer headache complaints and better recall on colour-dependent tasks.
