Manufacturing tolerance means LEDs from the same wafer have varying chromaticity, voltage, and flux. Sorting them into 'bins' before assembly is what makes a ceiling of 100 fixtures look uniform, or patchwork. SDCM = Standard Deviation Colour Matching, in MacAdam ellipses. Premium = ≤ 3. Budget = ≤ 7. The single most important spec for visual quality.
Four ideas to carry into the next specification conversation you have.
Even within one wafer. The colour of two 4000K LEDs from the same supplier can differ by 5 MacAdam steps without binning.
Three-step MacAdam ellipse. The eye barely detects the difference.
Don't mix bins on one project. Order from same bin code to guarantee match, even across deliveries.
ANSI's CCT quadrangles allow ~7-step variance. Buying 'ANSI 4000K' alone doesn't guarantee tight binning. Spec SDCM explicitly.
