The third receptor, light that sets your clock

In 2002, researchers found a third class of photoreceptor, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), containing the pigment melanopsin. They don't help you see. They tell the suprachiasmatic nucleus what time it is. They suppress melatonin, raise alertness, and align circadian rhythm. The lighting industry has built an entire new metric, Melanopic EDI, around them.

How ipRGCs change lighting practice

Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) is built on melanopsin.

Schools, hospitals, offices now run tunable-white systems that go 6500K mornings and 2700K evenings, directly stimulating or sparing ipRGCs to align circadian rhythm.

WELL Building Standard set 250 EML by day.

Equivalent Melanopic Lux ≥ 250 at the eye between 9:00 and 13:00 in regularly occupied spaces. Now updated to Melanopic EDI 250 lux per CIE S 026.

Evening hospitality moved to amber.

5-star hotels use 2200–2700K with low blue content after 18:00. Guests sleep better, return rate goes up. Saudi Vision 2030 tourism brands now spec this.

Hospital ward lighting reset circadian.

ICU patients with no daylight had delirium rates near 70%. Dynamic lighting matching solar timing cut delirium by 30%. Now standard in modern hospital ICU specs.
